About Luke
Luke Baumgarten entered law after an unusually visual undergraduate path. He earned a B.F.A. in Studio Art from the University of Idaho in 2001 and returned to the same campus to complete a J.D. at the University of Idaho College of Law in 2005. The transition from studio to statute set the stage for a career in public service and private practice alike.
He began his legal career in Whitman County. In 2006 he served as a Rule 9 prosecutor for the Whitman County Prosecutor’s Office. That early role placed him in courtrooms handling matters assigned under the county’s prosecutorial rules. Two years later he took on broader responsibilities as a Deputy Prosecuting Lawyer for Whitman County, a position he held in 2008. Those years provided sustained courtroom exposure and day-to-day work on prosecutions at the county level.
After his time in the prosecutor’s office, Baumgarten moved into private practice. He established Baumgarten Law Office PLLC, where he now practices. The firm carries the imprint of his prior public-sector work: much of his early caseload and courtroom experience came from handling county prosecutions and related litigation. He has applied that background to represent clients in matters that require trial preparation and navigation of court procedures.
Colleagues and clients have described him as precise in court filings and deliberate when preparing witnesses. He is known for taking cases into the courtroom and for managing the practical details that trial work demands. The combination of prosecutorial experience and a private practice provides a perspective on both sides of criminal matters and on the tactical decisions that arise before and during trial.
Outside the courtroom he brings a rounded educational background to his work. The B.F.A. in Studio Art is an uncommon precursor to law, and it has informed his approach to evidence presentation and case narrative. His legal training at the University of Idaho College of Law followed quickly, and he carried that foundation into roles in Whitman County and then into his own firm.
Baumgarten is licensed to practice in Washington and bases his practice in that state. He continues to operate Baumgarten Law Office PLLC, handling trial work and litigation that draw upon his years as a county prosecutor and his subsequent private practice experience.
