About Luis A.

Luis A. Aviles has a background in both science and law. He earned a B.S. in Physics from the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez in 1980 and an M.A. in Physics from Harvard University in 1984. He later turned to law, completing a J.D. at Harvard Law School in the early 1990s and an LL.M. in European Law at Universite Panthéon-Assas (Paris II) in 2010. The combination of technical training and advanced legal study suggests a career shaped by varied intellectual interests.

Public service has been a recurring thread in Aviles’s profile. In 2005 he served as President of the Board of Governors of the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority. Two years later he was named Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors at the Government Development Bank for Puerto Rico. Those roles placed him in the middle of large, complex public institutions during periods of policy and financial challenge. The positions required management of governance issues and interaction with government officials, regulators and the business community.

Academia has also been part of his professional life. Since 2009 he has held the title of Full Professor at the University of Puerto Rico School of Law. That appointment indicates ongoing engagement with legal education and scholarship alongside his other responsibilities. His academic work sits alongside practice and public service rather than replacing them.

On the credential side, Aviles holds a trial advocacy certification from the National Association of Trial Lawyers and has maintained membership in the American Bar Association since 1993. He is authorized to appear in matters before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit and is admitted to practice in Puerto Rico. Those qualifications reflect both courtroom readiness and a long-standing connection to national and local professional networks.

Today he practices under the name Luis A. Aviles, Esq. The profile of degrees and roles — science training, American and European legal education, public board leadership, and a law professorship — points to an attorney who moves between institutional settings and the classroom. He currently practices under the name Luis A. Aviles, Esq., serving clients in Puerto Rico and in proceedings before the First Circuit.
