About Les

Les Wallerstein built a career that bridges law, psychology and dispute resolution. He studied Spanish literature and psychology at New York University, completing a B.A. in Spanish Literature in 1967 and an M.A. in Psychology in 1970. Years later he turned to law, earning a J.D. from New England Law | Boston in 1990. Those varied studies shaped a practice attentive to both legal rules and human behavior.

His public record includes admissions to the Massachusetts bar, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit and the U.S. Supreme Court. He has served in a range of roles since completing his legal education. In 2008 he held the office of Justice of the Peace in Massachusetts. He also took on editorial work for practitioners, serving as Editor of the Family Mediation Quarterly in 2002 under the auspices of the Massachusetts Council on Family Mediation.

Wallerstein’s involvement with the Massachusetts Council on Family Mediation has been long-standing. He has been a director of the organization since 1992 and served as its president from 2001 to 2002. The council is a professional body for mediators in the state and Wallerstein’s leadership roles there placed him at the center of efforts to shape practice standards and training for family mediation in Massachusetts.

He is a certified mediator through the Massachusetts Council on Family Mediation. That credential reflects a specialization in family dispute resolution. His career reflects a steady pivot toward mediation and alternatives to litigation, where his background in psychology informs his approach to settlement discussions and child- and family-centered issues.

Wallerstein’s work history includes private practice under the name Counselor At Law. In that setting he has combined counsel and mediation services, representing clients in matters that often require both negotiation and legal analysis. His dual grounding in law and psychology has been a consistent thread in how he frames cases and assists people facing family transitions.

Colleagues and clients encounter an attorney who has moved comfortably between institutional roles and hands-on dispute resolution. He has contributed to professional literature and governance while continuing to practice. His current practice concentrates on mediation and counseling related to family law matters.
