Born on April 1, 1942, in Los Angeles, California, he embarked on an academic journey that would shape his future. In 1966, he earned his Bachelor of Arts from the University of California, Berkeley. Three years later, in 1969, he graduated with a Juris Doctor from UCLA School of Law. His commitment to service was evident as he served in the United States Marine Corps from 1961 to 1964, an experience that would later inform his disciplined approach to law. Mr. Taylor began his legal career as a Deputy District Attorney for Los Angeles County from 1970 to 1971. This role provided him with invaluable courtroom experience.

Following this, he worked as a Deputy Public Defender from 1971 to 1972, where he developed his skills in defense strategies. In 1979, he founded The Law Offices of Lawrence Taylor, a firm that specialized exclusively in DUI defense. Under his leadership, the firm became a pioneer in this niche area of law, establishing offices in Woodland Hills and Irvine, California. His innovative approach to DUI cases set new standards in the field. Recognized for his expertise, Mr. Taylor was one of the original ten founders of the National College for DUI Defense. His leadership was further acknowledged when he was elected Dean for the 1995–1996 term. This organization is dedicated to advancing the practice of DUI defense, and Mr.

Taylor's contributions were instrumental in shaping its direction. His influence extended beyond practice; he was a prolific author and educator. He authored over thirty articles and twelve books, including the influential "Drunk Driving Defense," which has been cited by the U.S. Supreme Court in landmark cases, underscoring his impact on legal precedents. In addition to his writing, Mr. Taylor was a Fulbright Professor of Law at Osaka University in Japan in 1985. His role as a Visiting Professor at Pepperdine University School of Law further showcased his commitment to legal education. During his tenure at Gonzaga University School of Law from 1982 to 1985, he was voted "Professor of the Year," evidence of his dedication and effectiveness as an educator.

He also delivered over 200 continuing legal education seminars across 38 states, focusing on DUI trial techniques and constitutional issues, making him a sought-after lecturer in the legal community. Throughout his career, Mr. Taylor was recognized for his dedication to DUI defense and legal education. His innovative strategies and commitment to excellence left a lasting legacy in the legal community. On October 4, 2023, he passed away in Long Beach, California, leaving behind a profound impact on DUI defense law and a generation of lawyers inspired by his work. His contributions will continue to influence the field for years to come.
