About Laura Lynne

Laura Lynne Faer serves as a Supervising Deputy Attorney General at the California Department of Justice in Oakland. Since joining the State Bar of California in 2004, she has built a robust legal career focused on civil rights, particularly in education and children's rights. Faer earned her Juris Doctor from Columbia Law School in 2003, where she developed her legal skills and developed a focus on advocacy. Prior to her current role, she worked as a Deputy Attorney General from January 2019 until July 2021, during which time she worked in various legal matters. In 2021, Faer transitioned to her position as Supervising Deputy Attorney General, where she oversees critical cases and initiatives that impact the community.

Before joining the California Department of Justice, she served as the Regional Director and Chief Attorney at the Office for Civil Rights within the U.S. Department of Education from 2015 to 2019. In this capacity, she led efforts to ensure compliance with federal civil rights laws in educational institutions, advocating for equitable treatment of students across the nation. Her legal journey began at Public Counsel, where she worked as a Skadden Fellow and Attorney from 2004 to 2006. During this time, she focused on providing legal assistance to underserved populations.

Following her fellowship, she continued her work at Public Counsel as the Statewide Education Rights Director and Directing Attorney for the Children's Rights Project from 2008 to 2015. In this role, Faer was instrumental in advancing the rights of children in California, addressing systemic issues within the education system. Faer also gained judicial experience by clerking for the Honorable Stephen Reinhardt at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit from 2003 to 2004. This position provided her with a unique perspective on the judicial process and the details of appellate law.

In addition to her legal practice, she has been an Adjunct Professor at the University of California, Hastings College of the Law since 2019, where she shares her expertise with the next generation of legal professionals.
