About Laura J.

Laura J. Gabel has spent her career in Michigan courts and law offices. Her work began at the bench and moved quickly into private practice. Over the years she has combined courtroom experience with firm leadership.

She earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science and history from the University of Michigan in 1985. She then attended Wayne State University Law School, receiving her J.D. in 1988. Those academic years set the stage for an early introduction to appellate work and court procedure.

Her first post-law school position was as a pre-hearing lawyer at the Michigan Court of Appeals in 1988. That role put her inside the appellate process, drafting decisions and handling procedural matters for the court. In 1989 she joined Bendure & Thomas, P.C. as an associate lawyer and began handling a broader mix of client matters in private practice.

A year later she became a shareholder and president of Gabel, Gudmundsen & Gabel, P.C. That move shifted her responsibilities to include both case work and firm management. As president she has overseen daily operations, worked on client representation and participated in case strategy. Her time in leadership has included supervising other attorneys and guiding the firm’s approach to litigation.

Gabel is licensed to practice in Michigan and in the U.S. Eastern District of Michigan. She is also admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court. Those admissions reflect a practice that often reaches beyond trial courts and into appellate advocacy.

Her caseload has incorporated appellate matters and civil litigation, drawing on her early experience at the Court of Appeals. She has handled brief writing and oral argument in appellate settings and has been involved in trial preparation and management for civil cases in state and federal courts.

Colleagues describe her as steady and practical in court. She prefers careful preparation and clear legal writing. Outside the office she has maintained ties to Michigan’s legal community through her long-standing presence in local practice.

She currently practices at Gabel, Gudmundsen & Gabel, P.C., concentrating on appellate litigation and civil litigation matters.
