About Kevin Peter
Kevin Peter Rooney is a licensed attorney admitted to practice law in the State of California. He was admitted to the California State Bar in 1983. His license is currently in active status. Mr. Rooney is of counsel at Hammerschmidt Law Corporation, a criminal defense firm located in Fresno, California. He has been practicing law for over 40 years, serving clients throughout Central California, including Fresno, Kings, Madera, Tulare, Merced, and Stanislaus counties.
Mr. Rooney earned his Juris Doctor degree from Emory University School of Law in 1980. Prior to law school, he completed his undergraduate education at Cornell University, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in 1977. During his time at Emory, he developed a strong foundation in criminal law, which has been the focus of his legal career.
Mr. Rooney concentrates his practice in the areas of federal and state criminal defense and government investigations. He represents clients in matters involving conspiracy, drug offenses, money laundering, firearms violations, and fraud. His practice encompasses all stages of litigation, including initial case evaluation, discovery, mediation, settlement negotiations, and trial proceedings in both state and federal courts.
Throughout his career, Mr. Rooney has handled cases in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of California, the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, and various state courts in California. Prior to joining Hammerschmidt Law Corporation, he served as Chief of the Violent Crimes and Narcotics Unit in the United States Attorney’s Office, Eastern District of California, Fresno, where he was responsible for reviewing and approving wiretap applications, indictments, and plea bargains. He also worked in the Tulare County District Attorney’s Office, prosecuting a full range of state criminal offenses.
Mr. Rooney is an active member of the California State Bar Association and the Fresno County Bar Association. He has been recognized for his outstanding performance by organizations such as the DEA and FBI. He is fluent in English and Spanish, allowing him to serve the diverse communities of Central California effectively.
