About Kevin

Kevin Courtney entered law school after a focused undergraduate stint in political science. He earned his B.A. from the University of California, San Diego in 2014 and completed his J.D. at the University of California College of the Law, San Francisco in 2018. Those years framed an interest in military justice and appellate work that would shape his early legal path.

Fresh out of law school, Courtney served as a judicial law clerk at the Navy and Marine Corps Court of Criminal Appeals in 2018. In that role he worked on cases that tested military procedure and the interplay between trial records and appellate review. The clerkship offered frontline exposure to how military legal questions are argued and decided at the appellate level.

The following year he joined the United States Marine Corps as a judge advocate. His time on active duty placed him in the practical role of advising commanders and representing Marines in a range of military legal matters. The experience deepened his understanding of courts-martial, administrative processes, and the unique demands of military legal practice.

Courtney holds an Article 27(b) UCMJ certification from the Judge Advocate General of the Navy. That credential aligns with his background in both appellate work and operational legal support. It also reflects a continuity between his clerkship and his service as a judge advocate, tying together appellate procedure and trial-level practice.

He moved into private practice while maintaining a focus on military clients. Courtney is based at the Military Law Center, where he brings experience from both judicial and operational assignments. His work spans representation in courts-martial, administrative separations, and post-trial and appellate matters. He aims to combine procedural familiarity from the bench with the advocacy required at trial.

Colleagues describe him as someone who pays attention to the record and to the practical consequences of legal strategy. His training in political science and law provided a framework; his clerkship and Marine Corps service supplied the hands-on experience. He continues to work on behalf of service members, drawing on experience gained in both military courts and administrative settings.

He currently focuses his practice on military law and representation of service members.
