About Kent D.

Kent D. Syverud built a foundation in international affairs and economics before turning to law. He earned a B.A. from Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service in 1977, then completed a J.D. at the University of Michigan Law School in 1981. He stayed at Michigan to earn an M.A. in economics in 1983, a combination that would shape a career spanning private practice, scholarship, and academic leadership.

His early professional years mixed firm work and teaching. In 1985 he joined Wilmer, Cutler & Pickering, a Washington-based firm where he worked on matters that drew on both his legal training and economic background. Two years later he moved into academia, joining the University of Michigan Law School faculty in 1987 as a professor of law. There he taught and wrote on topics that intersect law and policy, while mentoring students and contributing to faculty governance.

Syverud’s career turned toward administration in the late 1990s. He accepted a deanship at Vanderbilt University Law School in 1997, leading efforts to align faculty priorities and curriculum planning. He later served as dean at Washington University School of Law beginning in 2005, a role that added fundraising and institutional strategy to his list of responsibilities. Those posts placed him at the center of legal education debates about curricular change, clinical training, and the role of the law school within its university.

In 2014 he took on a universitywide leadership role as chancellor and president of Syracuse University. That appointment shifted his portfolio from law school management to overseeing a large research university with diverse academic units. The position called for long-range planning, budgeting, and interaction with trustees, state officials, and university constituencies. His background in both legal education and economics informed decisions about enrollment, academic priorities, and campus resources.

Throughout his career Syverud has combined scholarship, teaching, and administration. He has experience in private practice, years on a major law faculty, and multiple deanships before moving into university leadership. He is admitted to practice in New York and has remained engaged in issues that touch law, policy, and higher education governance. He currently leads Syracuse University and maintains involvement with Syracuse University College of Law, focusing on university administration and legal education.
