About Kenneth S.

Kenneth S. Kamlet spent the 1960s and early 1970s in classrooms that set a scientific and legal foundation for his career. He earned a B.S. in Biology from City College of New York in 1966, completed an M.Phil. in Biochemical Sciences at Yale in 1970, and took his law degree from the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 1973. Those credentials helped him move fluidly between environmental science and the law.

His first legal role came immediately after law school. In 1973 he joined the National Wildlife Federation in Washington, D.C., serving as counsel and director of legal affairs. He handled legal work at a time when federal environmental statutes and regulations were becoming more central to public policy. The position placed him at the intersection of advocacy, regulatory interpretation and litigation.

Kamlet later moved into the private sector where his career split between consulting and law practice. In 1987 he became a manager and principal in the Environment, Health & Safety practice of A.T. Kearney in Alexandria, Virginia. That role married technical environmental issues to corporate compliance and project assessment. By 1994 he was practicing environmental law as a partner across several private firms, handling matters typical of the field: regulatory counsel, permitting, and administrative proceedings.

In 1997 he returned to an in-house legal role as director of legal affairs for Newman Development Group, LLC. In 2010 he took on the title of special counsel at Hinman, Howard & Kattell, LLP, a role he has held while maintaining a home office. His portfolio over the decades shows movement between advocacy organizations, consulting practices and private law firms.

Kamlet is admitted in multiple forums: New York, the District of Columbia and Maryland, and he is admitted to practice before the D.C. Circuit, the Federal Circuit and the U.S. Supreme Court. His professional recognitions include listings by Best Lawyers for Land Use and Zoning since 2018 and an AV rating from Martindale-Hubbell since at least 2010. He has held a 10/10 rating on AVVO since about 2014, and he was named to the Super Lawyers list for Upstate New York in Environmental Law from 2014 through 2019.

He handles matters that draw on both scientific background and legal training. His work ties regulatory strategy to litigation and transactional needs. He represents clients on land use, environmental and administrative matters.
