About Kathryn

Kathryn Lohmeyer-Rohrer earned her J.D. from Whittier Law School in 2005 after completing graduate and undergraduate work at American University, where she received an M.A. in 1992 and a B.A. in 1988. Her academic path combined liberal arts and graduate study before she turned to law school, a background that shows through in her teaching and courtroom writing.

Her early legal career was shaped by federal clerkships. She served as a term law clerk to Judge Florence Marie Cooper of the U.S. District Courts in 2005 and returned as a law clerk to the same judge in 2008. In 2010 she clerked for Judge Arthur L. Alarcon on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Those years inside the federal judiciary gave her steady exposure to criminal and civil federal practice and appellate procedure.

After law school she spent time in private practice as an associate at McDermott Will and Emery in 2006. She later worked as an associate at the Law Offices of Becky Walker James in 2012. Between private practice and clerking, she has also held staff and attorney roles within the Ninth Circuit, including serving as a staff lawyer for the court in 2015.

Teaching has become a consistent thread in her career. She taught Immigration Law as an adjunct at Whittier Law School in 2009. She has been an adjunct professor at The Santa Barbara & Ventura Colleges of Law and in 2017 she taught in UCLA Extension’s Paralegal Training Program. Her courses have ranged from foundational law school classes to practical training for paralegals, reflecting a mix of doctrinal and skills-oriented instruction.

Her work on appellate cases and her teaching of immigration law inform how she approaches cases: careful attention to procedure and to written argument. Colleagues describe her as methodical in legal research and precise in drafting opinions and briefs, traits that served her in multiple clerkships and in roles supporting the Ninth Circuit.

Outside the courtroom she has moved between litigation and education, drawing on both strands when advising clients and students. She balances litigation work with classroom responsibilities, and she continues to mentor students preparing for clerkships and appellate practice.

She currently teaches at The Santa Barbara & Ventura Colleges of Law and practices in immigration and appellate matters.
