About Kathie A.

Kathie A. Perry earned her law degree from Indiana University Maurer School of Law in 2001. She completed her legal studies at a time when public defense work was expanding in Indianapolis. That early environment shaped the way she approaches criminal cases: methodical, practical and courtroom-ready.

She began her career at the Marion County Public Defender Agency in 2001, serving as a deputy public defender. There she handled a steady docket of trials and pretrial matters. The job required quick preparation and clear decision-making. It also provided the courtroom hours that many criminal practitioners cite as formative.

In 2015 she moved into private practice leadership as managing partner at The Criminal Defense Team of Baldwin Perry & Kamish, P.C. Her role involves case oversight, mentoring younger attorneys and coordinating defense strategies across the office. She carries responsibility for both trial preparation and firm management, splitting time between client work and administrative duties.

Perry is board certified as a Criminal Trial Specialist by the National Board of Trial Advocacy. That certification signals a sustained emphasis on trial work and an ongoing investment in courtroom skills. She has been active in the National Board of Trial Advocacy beyond certification, serving on its Board of Directors since 2018. She also holds membership in the Indianapolis Bar Association.

Her courtroom style is grounded in clear organization and steady advocacy. She handles misdemeanor and felony matters, and she has prepared and tried cases at various stages, from arraignment through jury trial. Colleagues describe her approach as direct; clients see an attorney who prioritizes facts and practical options over rhetoric.

Outside of trial work she spends time training and reviewing case law relevant to criminal practice. As a managing partner she also fields calls from other attorneys in the office, helps shape case strategy and makes staffing decisions. Those tasks keep her connected to the daily grind of criminal defense while also steering the firm’s broader work.

Perry’s career track — from deputy public defender to managing partner and NBTA board member — shows a steady accumulation of courtroom experience and professional responsibility. She remains based in Indiana and continues to handle criminal defense matters at her firm. Her practice concentrates on criminal defense, representing individuals in a range of matters from lower-level offenses to serious felony charges.
