About Kate
Kate Thorne came to law after completing undergraduate work at Texas A&M University, where she earned a B.A. in 2013. She then attended Baylor Law School, receiving her J.D. in 2017. Those years set the stage for a practice grounded in Texas law and shaped by early courtroom exposure.
As a law student, Thorne spent a summer in 2015 as a judicial intern to the Honorable Zack Hawthorn at the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas. That experience gave her a close look at federal procedure and the daily workings of a trial court. After law school she joined MehaffyWeber as an associate in 2017, beginning a steady climb through the firm’s ranks.
Thorne became a shareholder at MehaffyWeber in 2024. Her portfolio includes matters that arise for older adults and their families. She holds a Guardianship Ad Litem certification from the Texas State Bar and maintains membership in the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys. Those credentials inform how she approaches cases that involve incapacity, guardianship proceedings and related conservatorship questions.
Her record in local bar organizations stretches back to 2017. She has been active in the Jefferson County Young Lawyers Association since that year, serving as a director in 2018–2019, as treasurer in 2019–2020 and as secretary in 2020–2021. Participation in professional groups has been part of her practice rhythm. It keeps her connected to colleagues across eastern Texas and to developments affecting older clients.
Colleagues describe her as attentive to procedural detail and steady in client communication. In practice she handles filings, court appearances and the paperwork common to guardianship and elder law matters. She also works on related estate planning and probate tasks that often intersect with guardianship issues.
Thorne splits time between her firm’s Beaumont and Houston offices. That arrangement lets her meet clients in southeast Texas and appear in local courts when necessary. She remains a Texas-licensed lawyer and continues to build her practice around matters affecting older adults and guardianship proceedings.
Her current practice focuses on guardianship work, elder law issues and probate-related matters, handled from MehaffyWeber’s Beaumont and Houston offices.
