About Karen

Karen Covy built her path to the law through a mix of academic rigor and practical training. She arrived at Notre Dame Law School after undergraduate study and a year of study in France. At Notre Dame she took on demanding assignments on paper and in the courtroom.

She earned her Juris Doctor from the University of Notre Dame in 1984. While there she served on the Notre Dame Law Review and was a member of the Notre Dame Trial Advocacy Team. Those two experiences shaped her early approach: careful legal research and an appreciation for oral advocacy. Before law school she completed a B.A. at Western Michigan University in 1981 and spent time at L’Institut de Touraine, earning a Certificat d’Etudes in 1980.

After graduation she moved into legal practice. Her background in legal writing and competitive advocacy informed the cases she took on and the way she prepared them. Clients and colleagues expect thorough briefs and calm performance in the hearing room—skills that trace back to her law review editing and trial-team work.

Her work has required close attention to evidence, witness preparation, and courtroom procedure. She has handled matters that called for careful factual development and clear presentation to judges and juries. On the writing side, she has produced memoranda and briefs that rely on precise citation and concise legal analysis.

Across a career that began after law school, she has balanced advocacy and counsel tasks. She has guided clients through contested proceedings and also addressed legal questions outside of trial settings. Her training in France and the United States has influenced how she approaches language and analysis in complex matters.

Colleagues describe her as methodical in preparation and straightforward in courtroom style. She tends to let the record and the law speak for her work. Her background in both the academic and practical sides of the law gives her a steady base from which to address disputes and legal problems.

As of 2026 she continues to practice law and concentrates her work on litigation and trial advocacy.
