About Kaelyn Jean
Kaelyn Jean Romey is an attorney specializing in tax litigation. Currently, she serves as a Visiting Professor at UC Law San Francisco. She shares her extensive knowledge and experience with law students. Ms. Romey has been a member of the State Bar of California since December 2001, demonstrating her long-standing commitment to the legal profession. Her academic journey began at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts in Law and Society with Honors Emphasis in 1995. This foundational education laid the groundwork for her legal career. After completing her undergraduate studies, Ms.
Romey pursued further education at the University of San Diego School of Law. There, she obtained both her Juris Doctor and Master of Laws in Taxation. These advanced degrees gave her specialized knowledge essential for her future roles in tax law. From 2006 to 2017, she served as Senior Counsel at the U.S. Department of the Treasury, specifically within the Office of Chief Counsel, Small Business/Self-Employed Division. In this capacity, she developed and analyzed tax audit strategies while advising international audit teams on complex tax matters. In addition to her work at the Treasury, Ms. Romey has held significant academic positions.
She served as the Director of the Litigation Center and Professor of Law at Golden Gate University School of Law. Her teaching experience extends to her roles as an Adjunct Professor at both UC Hastings College of the Law and Santa Clara University School of Law. Through these positions, she has influenced the next generation of legal professionals, sharing her expertise in tax law and litigation. Active participation in professional organizations is a hallmark of Ms. Romey's career — She currently serves as Co-chair of the ABA Evidence - Criminal Tax Sub-Committee. Additionally, she is a member of the California State Bar Taxation Section Advisory Board. Her involvement does not stop there; she has also contributed to the Queen’s Bench Education Committee and the AALS Women in Legal Education Committee. These roles reflect her dedication to advancing the legal field and supporting her peers.
Beyond her professional and academic roles, Ms. Romey is committed to enhancing legal education nationwide. She has been involved with the National Institute of Trial Advocacy (NITA), providing training in tax litigation, online proceedings, deposition skills, and trial advocacy. Her expertise is recognized in various courts, as she is admitted to practice before the United States Tax Court and the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. Through her multifaceted career, Ms. Romey continues to make significant contributions to the fields of tax law and legal education.
