About Joshua
Joshua Smisko built his legal foundation at the University of California, Irvine, where he completed a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science in 2001 after beginning studies in 1998. He went on to earn his Juris Doctor from Whittier Law School, finishing the program in 2007 following matriculation in 2004. Those formative years gave him a grounding in legal theory and the procedural rules that shape courtroom practice.
After law school he entered private practice and maintained a presence in California courts. Over time he gained credentials to appear before the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit as well as in California state courts. Admission to those jurisdictions expanded the range of matters he could pursue and the forums in which he could advocate.
His work occupies both trial-level and appellate settings. He has experience preparing briefs, handling hearings, and advancing arguments in court. In filings and oral advocacy, he pays attention to procedure as much as to substance. He writes to persuade and presents issues in a way that judges and opposing counsel can follow.
Colleagues and clients describe him as methodical in approach. He favors careful case analysis and preparation over flash. That practical style shows up in how he manages intake, investigates claims, and structures litigation. He combines document review with focused legal research. He uses pleadings and motions to clarify the stakes of a dispute and to press for resolution when appropriate.
Outside the courtroom his background in political science informs a broader view of regulatory and administrative contexts. That perspective can be useful when matters touch on statutory interpretation or agency rules. He keeps current on developments in California law and Ninth Circuit precedent so that courtroom positions reflect recent case law.
Today he practices as a lawyer in California and appears in matters before the Ninth Circuit, handling cases brought in both state and federal forums.
