About Joshua
Joshua Kaizuka earned his J.D. from the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law in 2000, completing an advocacy concentration during his studies. He began his legal training in an academic environment that emphasized courtroom practice and trial skills.
Kaizuka moved into public defense work soon after graduation. In 2001 he joined the Yolo County Public Defender’s Office as a deputy public defender. That role placed him in court regularly and exposed him to a broad range of criminal matters at an early stage of his career.
After several years in public service he entered private practice. In 2007 he worked as an associate at the Law Office of Mark Merin. He later spent time at private criminal defense firms beginning in 2010. In 2013 he opened his own practice, the Law Office of Joshua Kaizuka. Running his own office allowed him to shape his caseload and provide direct client representation across criminal matters.
Kaizuka has pursued training that relates to impaired driving cases. He holds certification to administer Standardized Field Sobriety Tests and completed Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement (ARIDE) training through La Pier & Associates. Those certifications complement his courtroom work and inform his handling of DUI-related evidence and procedure.
Professional and community involvement has been a steady part of Kaizuka’s career. He has been a member of the California Lawyers for Criminal Justice since 2015 and has served on its Legislative Committee since 2016. He belongs to the Asian American Criminal Trial Lawyers Association and the California DUI Lawyers Association. He has maintained membership in the Sacramento County Bar Association and the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association. He has been affiliated with the ACLU and the California Public Defenders Association as well.
Kaizuka’s leadership roles include a sequence of positions within the Asian Pacific Bar Association of Sacramento, including chairing the Advocacy and Issues Committee, serving as president-elect, and holding the presidency in 2014. He has also served on boards and chaired committees for the Sacramento County Bar Association, and he has been active in the Florin Japanese American Citizens League, serving as civil rights co-chair and later as co-president.
He brings courtroom experience from public defense and private practice into his current work. He represents clients on criminal and DUI matters and consults on issues that arise from roadside stops and related procedures. His current practice concentrates on criminal defense and DUI representation.
