About Joshua

Joshua Friedman began his academic path at Columbia University, earning a B.A. in 1981 and continuing there for graduate studies in economics in 1982. He then returned to Columbia for law school and received his J.D. from Columbia Law School in 1985. The sequence of degrees shaped a practice grounded in both legal doctrine and economic context.

After law school, Friedman launched a private practice. In 1987 he opened the Law Offices of Joshua Friedman, where he represented individuals and businesses on a range of employment-related matters. That experience running a solo practice gave him direct exposure to the courtroom and to the practical demands of client representation. He later joined Friedman & Houlding LLP and became a partner there in 2014, moving into a role that combined casework with firm leadership responsibilities.

Friedman is licensed in New York. His professional associations underscore his focus on employment law. He is a current member of the National Association of Employment Lawyers. Since 2000 he has maintained membership in the National Employment Lawyers Association, New York Affiliate. Those affiliations have kept him connected to developments in labor and employment litigation and to an informal network of colleagues who handle similar matters.

Throughout his career Friedman has handled litigation and counseling on workplace disputes. He has worked on cases involving alleged discrimination, wage-and-hour claims, wrongful termination, and contract disputes between employers and employees. His background in economics has informed how he evaluates damages and wage issues in litigation. He has represented both individual claimants and entities, adapting strategies to the scale and objectives of each client.

Columbia Law School provided the legal training that underpins Friedman’s courtroom approach. His early graduate work in economics at Columbia has continued to inform his practice, particularly on matters where financial analysis and damages calculations are central. Over the decades he has balanced trial work with negotiations and administrative proceedings, shifting tactics to reflect changes in employment law and in the regulatory environment.

Today Friedman practices in New York and is a partner at Friedman & Houlding LLP. He maintains memberships in national and state employment law organizations and continues to represent clients in employment disputes, wage-and-hour matters, discrimination claims, and related contract issues in the New York jurisdiction.
