About Josh

Josh Gerben built a career at the intersection of law and brand identity. He studied business and law in Washington, D.C., earning a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from The George Washington University Law School and a J.D. from American University Washington College of Law. Early academic recognition came from the Washington College of Law, which noted his work while he was a student.

After law school he moved straight into intellectual property work. He is admitted to practice in Maryland, Vermont, the District of Columbia, Virginia and Florida. He joined the D.C. Bar in 2012 and remains an active member. Over time he concentrated his practice on trademark filings, counseling, and related clearance work. Those steady years of filings produced an unusual metric: at one point he was ranked the #3 trademark filer in the United States.

Gerben founded Gerben Intellectual Property to manage trademark prosecution and counseling at scale. The firm handles a high volume of client filings and offers portfolio management services. Inside the firm, he oversees a team that handles day-to-day prosecution, office actions, oppositions, and coordination of domestic and international filings. His work relies on systems and processes designed to move large numbers of matters through the trademark offices efficiently.

Colleagues describe him as pragmatic and detail-oriented in handling application strategy. He draws on his undergraduate business training when advising clients on brand selection and clearance risk. He often counsels startups and small businesses that need practical steps to protect names and logos. The emphasis is on reducing uncertainty around registration and on building portfolios that reflect clients’ commercial plans.

Public-facing recognition of his filing volume has drawn attention in industry circles and among peers who watch filing trends. He has also been recognized by his alma mater for his professional achievements. He maintains an active role in practice management and in refining the systems his firm uses to track deadlines, deadlines, and filings across jurisdictions.

He currently runs Gerben Intellectual Property and continues to handle trademark prosecution, portfolio management, and related intellectual property matters.
