About Joseph
Joseph Wilson built his legal foundation with three consecutive degrees in business and law. He earned a B.S. in Business from Providence College, a J.D. from the James E. Rogers College of Law at the University of Arizona, and an LL.M. in Taxation from the University of San Diego. Those credentials set the stage for a career that has moved between private practice, government service and boutique tax work.
He began his professional life as a tax associate at Deloitte & Touche in San Diego in 2003. That role led to a position in the Office of Chief Counsel at the Internal Revenue Service in San Diego in 2006, where he handled tax issues from the government side. In 2008 he joined the Tax Division of the United States Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California as an assistant United States lawyer. By 2010 he was serving as a Tax Counsel III Specialist in the Legal Division of the California Franchise Tax Board in Sacramento. He spent time at a boutique tax controversy law office in 2011 before establishing and becoming managing partner of Wilson Tax Law Group in Newport Beach in 2014.
His court admissions span state and federal forums. He is admitted in California and is authorized to appear before the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, the U.S. Tax Court, the Ninth Circuit, the D.C. Circuit and the Federal Circuit. Those admissions reflect the mix of trial, administrative and appellate work he has handled across his career.
Wilson keeps an active presence in tax bar organizations. He holds memberships in the American Bar Association’s Tax Section and the Association of Tax Counsel. He also participates in state and local sections, including the State Bar of California Tax Section, the San Diego County Bar Tax Section and the Orange County Bar Tax Section. He has held leadership roles as vice chair of the Orange County Bar Association, chair of the San Diego County Bar Association, vice chair of the State Bar of California Tax Section and chair of the Young Tax Lawyers San Diego chapter.
His practice involves tax controversy and litigation for individuals and businesses. He represents clients in administrative proceedings, in federal and state courts, and on appeal. He draws on experience from both government enforcement and private defense to handle disputes involving audits, collection, and appellate review.
He runs Wilson Tax Law Group from its Newport Beach office, maintaining a Yorba Linda branch and a central mailing office. His current practice centers on tax controversy and appellate representation.
