About Joseph William

Joseph William Montgomery built his legal foundation at the University of Tampa, where he completed undergraduate studies in International Business in 2001. He went on to earn a J.D. from Widener University Delaware School of Law in 2008. Those years set the stage for a career that moves between courtroom work and advocacy on behalf of families and students.

Fresh out of law school, Montgomery joined the Philadelphia District Lawyer's Office as an Assistant District Lawyer in 2008. The job placed him in the practical rhythm of trial practice and case preparation. He handled the day-to-day duties that come with prosecutorial work and developed an understanding of litigation mechanics early in his career.

In 2012 he served as a judicial law clerk at the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas. The clerkship offered a different vantage point. He worked closely with judges, reviewed filings and drafts of opinions, and absorbed courtroom procedure from the bench side. That same year he took on a leadership role in private practice as Special Education Department Chair at Montgomery Law, LLC. The chairmanship signaled a shift toward education law and policy, work that combines administrative hearings, advocacy and coordination with school systems.

Montgomery has practiced in both Pennsylvania and New Jersey and holds admission to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. Those credentials allow him to appear in state and federal matters across multiple forums. He also maintains membership in the Council of Parent Lawyers and Advocates (COPAA), an organization that connects attorneys, parents and advocates focused on special education and disability rights.

His résumé includes work at Shaw Law as well as the firm bearing his own name. In each setting, he has balanced contested hearings and negotiated resolutions. The mix of public-sector experience, a clerkship and private-practice leadership informs how he approaches cases and client matters.

He lives professionally at the intersection of education and litigation. Today he practices through Shaw Law and Montgomery Law, LLC and handles special education matters across Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
