About Joseph P.

Joseph P. Shannon built his legal foundation in two Pacific Northwest classrooms. He graduated from the University of Portland in 1985 with a B.A. in history and completed his J.D. at the University of Notre Dame in 1988. Those years shaped the way he approaches research and argument. He values clear chronology and careful precedent.

After law school he moved into practice and established himself across state lines. He is licensed to practice in Illinois and Washington, and over the years has worked in environments that ranged from small firms to larger trial teams. Colleagues describe him as methodical in preparation and straightforward in court, preferring direct exposition over ornate rhetoric.

Shannon’s involvement in professional organizations has been a steady part of his career. He served as chairman of the Illinois State Bar Association and remains active in that organization. He also holds membership in the American Association of Justice. Those roles have kept him connected to evolving rules of procedure and to networks of litigators across the country.

Courtroom work and association leadership have informed his approach to client matters. He pays attention to the details judges and juries notice: witness preparation, documentary clarity, and timing. In practice he emphasizes building a record and testing positions early. He is known for taking cases through trial when necessary but also for preparing files that allow for pragmatic resolution when that serves a client’s interest.

His primary office is Shannon Law Group, P.C., where he handles matters that arise in the two states where he is licensed. He maintains a steady docket and splits professional time between motion practice, depositions, and hearings. Peers note that his courtroom experience complements his association work; both require the same habits of discipline and review.

Beyond the courtroom and bar activities he has written and spoken on subjects related to litigation procedure and trial technique at local bar CLEs. That work has been practical rather than theoretical, aimed at improving day-to-day practice for other lawyers.

He is based at Shannon Law Group, P.C., and practices in matters arising in Illinois and Washington. He currently concentrates his practice on litigation and courtroom advocacy for clients in those jurisdictions.
