About Joseph L.

Joseph L. Hoffmann is a law professor whose career spans courtroom experience and academic work. He has been a fixture at Indiana University Maurer School of Law for decades and holds the Harry Pratter Professorship of Law, a title he took on in 2000. His path to the academy runs through some of the busiest corridors of American law.

He graduated from Harvard University with a B.A. in 1978 and earned his J.D. from the University of Washington School of Law in 1984. He moved quickly into federal clerkships. In 1984 he served as a law clerk to Judge Phyllis A. Kravitch on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. The following year he clerked for Justice William H. Rehnquist at the Supreme Court of the United States.

Those early years in the federal judiciary informed his later work in teaching and research. He joined the faculty at Indiana University Maurer School of Law and was named the Harry Pratter Professor of Law in 2000. Over time he has taught a wide range of courses, advised student work, and contributed to the law school's academic life. Colleagues and students have come to expect rigorous classroom discussion and careful attention to legal doctrine.

Hoffmann is affiliated with the Seventh Circuit for purposes of practice and litigation filings. That connection to the federal appellate system sits alongside his academic role and his previous experience inside appellate and Supreme Court chambers. The combination gives him a vantage point on questions of procedure, appellate review, and the interplay between trial courts and higher tribunals.

His clerkships at the Eleventh Circuit and the Supreme Court are often cited as formative. Working for Judge Kravitch placed him in an active appellate environment early in his career. Serving Justice Rehnquist the next year exposed him to the Supreme Court's deliberative process and to national constitutional debates. Those assignments shaped his approach to legal analysis and to mentoring students who aim for appellate practice or judicial clerkships of their own.

He continues to teach and write at Indiana University Maurer School of Law. His current work centers on classroom teaching, supervising research, and contributing to the law school's curriculum and public programs.
