About Josef

Josef Nussbaum trained in two legal traditions. He earned both an LL.B. and a B.C.L. from McGill University’s Faculty of Law, then studied at the Free University of Amsterdam. That educational path gave him exposure to common-law and civil-law approaches early in his career.

Nussbaum entered practice in New York and built a litigation practice that took him into state and federal courts. By 2011 he became a partner at Joseph & Kirschenbaum LLP. His partnership followed years of courtroom work and case preparation, where he handled pleadings, motions and trials in matters brought in New York courts.

He is admitted to practice before the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and in the federal courts for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York. He is also admitted in New York State courts. Those admissions reflect a practice that operates across district and appellate levels. He has experience managing cases through discovery and dispositive motion practice in both state and federal settings.

Colleagues describe him as methodical in litigation preparation. He approaches fact development and legal research with attention to detail. In the courtroom he has argued motions and appeared in hearings. Outside it, he has managed client communications and coordinated with experts and co-counsel on complex matters.

At Joseph & Kirschenbaum LLP Nussbaum has worked on a range of civil litigation matters. The firm has handled contested cases in New York courts, and his role there has involved both trial-level work and appeals. He joined the partnership in 2011 and has remained with the firm since, participating in case strategy and courtroom advocacy.

He keeps ties to the academic training that shaped his early approach to law. His studies at McGill and the Free University of Amsterdam gave him comparative perspectives that inform how he frames legal arguments. These perspectives are evident in his written submissions and oral advocacy.

Nussbaum continues to practice at Joseph & Kirschenbaum LLP, where he concentrates on litigation handled in the New York state and federal courts where he is admitted.
