About Jonathan R

Jonathan R Miller built an uncommon academic foundation before entering the law. He earned a B.A. in mathematics from the State University of New York at Binghamton in 1981. He later completed an M.S. in social work at Columbia University in 1988. He returned to school again and received a J.D. from Cornell University in 2005.

Those degrees mark a course that crosses disciplines. The mathematics training informs his approach to complex problems and quantitative analysis. The social work degree shaped his understanding of systems and the human side of legal disputes. The law degree added courtroom procedure and statutory analysis to that mix.

After law school he began practicing in the tri-state area and expanded into federal court. He is admitted to practice in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, and he maintains admission to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. He is a current member of the New York State Bar. His practice has included matters filed in state courts and in federal forums across the region.

Colleagues describe him as methodical in preparing filings and steady under pressure. He prefers to build cases by breaking issues into smaller parts and testing each piece against the record. That approach reflects both his analytical training and his earlier work in social services. It also helps when cases require translating technical or numerical material into plain language for judges and juries.

He splits time between a primary office and an appointment-only office in New York. He handles client consultations in person and by other means when matters require. Over the years he has handled a range of disputes in local and federal courts, often working on matters that cross jurisdictional lines.

Outside the courtroom he remains engaged with professional matters in New York’s legal community. He maintains continuing legal education in areas tied to his work and keeps an active presence in bar association activities. He continues to take on cases that draw on his background in mathematics and social work, and he maintains offices in the region while seeing New York clients by appointment.
