About Jonathan
Jonathan Purcell earned his J.D. from the University of California College of the Law, San Francisco in 2000. During law school he studied tax, estate planning, intellectual property and business law. Those subjects have continued to shape his practice ever since.
After finishing law school he entered practice in California and built a practice around federal and state tax matters, estate planning and business affairs. Over the years he has taken on disputes before administrative bodies and courts, advised on transactional issues and drafted plans for individuals and enterprises.
He is admitted to practice in California and is also authorized in the US District Court for the Northern District of California and before the US Tax Court. Those admissions allow him to represent clients in a range of proceedings, from district court litigation to tax court matters and contested administrative hearings.
Purcell’s work spans tax controversy, estate and succession planning, intellectual property concerns tied to business assets, and general business law. He represents taxpayers in examinations and appeals, prepares estate documents and trusts, and assists business clients with agreements that touch on ownership and licensing. His approach is practical and detail-oriented. He aims for clarity in documents and pragmatism in dispute resolution.
He maintains current professional memberships in relevant bar and tax organizations. That participation keeps him connected to developments in federal tax rules, trust and estate practice, and the intersection of IP and business law. He has used those resources to refine practice procedures and to stay abreast of shifting administrative practices.
Purcell practices at NorCal Tax Law. At that office he works with individuals, families and small to mid-size companies. His caseload mixes advisory work and contested matters. He spends time drafting plans and agreements, preparing filings for tax controversies, and representing clients in hearings.
He currently concentrates his practice on tax law, estate planning, intellectual property matters as they relate to business assets, and business law at NorCal Tax Law.
