About Jonathan David

Jonathan David Townsend built a nontraditional path to the law. He studied biblical studies and earned a Bachelor of Arts from Southern Christian University in 2005. He then completed a Master of Ministry at Freed-Hardeman University in 2009 before turning to legal studies and earning his J.D. from Samford University in 2014. The sequence of degrees signals a shift from religious scholarship toward a professional legal practice, and his résumé shows steady academic progression.

After law school, Townsend moved into practice in the southeastern United States. He is admitted to practice in Alabama and Tennessee, and he is also admitted to appear before the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. He holds current membership in the Alabama State Bar. Those admissions allow him to operate across state and federal forums and to take on matters that range from trial-level proceedings to appellate work.

Townsend is a member of the firm Cockrell, Cockrell, Townsend & Ritchey, LLP. At the firm he handles matters that arise in state courts in Alabama and Tennessee, as well as cases that proceed to the Eleventh Circuit. He represents clients in filings, hearings, and appellate briefs. He serves in a courtroom role when litigation requires it, and he prepares legal documents and advocacy for clients facing civil and procedural challenges.

Colleagues describe him as methodical in preparing a case file and deliberate in written advocacy. His background in ministry and biblical studies preceded his legal training, and those earlier studies contribute to the way he approaches client meetings and case strategy. He has combined classroom instruction, graduate theological work, and law study into a practice that spans multiple forums and subject matters.

Outside of firm activities, Townsend maintains professional ties through bar membership and stays active in the legal community of Alabama. He handles both client-facing tasks and behind-the-scenes legal work, splitting time between courtroom appearances and appellate brief writing. He is available for matters that require representation in Alabama, Tennessee, and before the Eleventh Circuit.

He currently practices at Cockrell, Cockrell, Townsend & Ritchey, LLP, representing clients in state and federal matters across Alabama and Tennessee and in proceedings before the Eleventh Circuit.
