About Jon R.

Jon R. Cox came to law after studying criminal justice at Boise State University and earning his Juris Doctor from the University of Idaho College of Law in 1989. His academic path combined classroom study of criminal justice with formal legal training. The law degree set the stage for a long career in private practice based in Boise.

He joined Davison, Copple & Copple in 1991, working as a lawyer and later as a partner. Those early years were spent building courtroom experience and developing a practice rooted in litigation and advocacy. In 2009 he became managing partner of Cox Law PLLC, a firm he leads from downtown Boise.

Cox is admitted to practice in Idaho, before the Ninth Circuit, and in the U.S. Supreme Court. Those admissions allow him to handle matters in state and federal trial courts as well as appellate proceedings. Over the decades he has moved between trial advocacy and appellate work, drawing on knowledge of procedure and case law to press client positions in multiple forums.

Colleagues describe him as methodical in preparing cases and straightforward in courtroom presentations. He has maintained a steady presence in Boise’s legal community since the early 1990s. His office is located in the Chase Bank Building in downtown Boise, where the firm meets clients and conducts hearings when not appearing at courthouses across the state and region.

Cox’s career path reflects the arc of many lawyers who combine firm leadership with hands-on representation. He shifted from partner at an established firm to managing partner at his own firm, a move that placed administrative and strategic responsibilities on his desk in addition to casework. Managing a practice has involved supervising other lawyers, overseeing filings and deadlines, and steering litigation strategies in both trial and appellate settings.

Outside the courtroom he has remained connected to local legal networks, continuing a practice that spans more than three decades. He has handled matters that require appearances in Idaho courts, filings before the Ninth Circuit, and representation in proceedings that can involve the U.S. Supreme Court. He currently practices from Cox Law PLLC in the Chase Bank Building in downtown Boise, representing clients in state and federal courts including appellate matters.
