About Jon

Jon Graves built a legal foundation in two of the country's established schools. He earned an A.B. from Dartmouth College in 1986 and received his J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1990. Those credentials sit at the start of a career spent largely in federal practice and firm partnership.

After law school, Graves went into private practice and rose through the ranks to partnership at Cooley Godward Kronish LLP. His title there reflects a long-term presence in a national firm environment. The partnership role positioned him to take lead roles on complex filings and to represent clients in multi-layered disputes across jurisdictions.

Graves is admitted to multiple courts, including Virginia and the District of Columbia. He also holds admission in several federal courts: the Federal Circuit, the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, and the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. Those admissions illustrate a practice that touches both trial and appellate venues.

Colleagues describe Graves as methodical and precise. He is the kind of lawyer who prepares detailed briefs and expects hearings to be grounded in precedent and procedure. His background at a large firm meant working on teams that combined litigation strategy, client counseling and pleadings work. The roster of courts where he is admitted suggests frequent involvement in matters that require federal practice experience.

Graves's education at Dartmouth and the University of Virginia fed into a law career that favors litigation pathways and federal filings. He has spent decades practicing in environments where procedural command matters—where deadline management, jurisdictional strategy and appellate timing can determine outcomes. That experience influenced the way he manages matters and communicates with clients and opposing counsel.

Outside strict case work, Graves's long tenure at a firm like Cooley Godward Kronish LLP required mentoring junior lawyers, participating in firm governance and contributing to case planning across practice groups. His role as partner involved balancing client-facing duties with internal responsibilities common to senior lawyers at national firms.

He currently practices at Cooley Godward Kronish LLP, handling matters in the federal and state courts before the jurisdictions to which he is admitted.
