About John W.
John W. Tilley earned his J.D. from Brooklyn Law School in 1978. He began law school in the mid-1970s and completed his degree at a time of shifting legal practice and courtroom procedure. His legal education provided a foundation that he carried into a long career in state courts and dispute resolution.
He is admitted to practice in both Michigan and New York. Over the years he has maintained an active relationship with the State Bar of Michigan, holding membership since 1990. He has also been a member of the Family Law Section of the State Bar of Michigan since 1997, a connection that has shaped much of his professional work.
Tilley expanded his role beyond courtroom advocacy by training and serving as a mediator. He is certified as a mediator for Michigan’s 13th Judicial Circuit. That credential has allowed him to handle settlement discussions and custody negotiations outside the formal trial context. He has balanced the roles of advocate and neutral, moving between litigation and mediation as cases required.
His professional title is Of Counsel at Neumann Law Group. In that role he consults on family law matters and offers mediation services to clients and other lawyers. The position has him working alongside trial counsel and advising on strategy, while also accepting referrals for mediated resolution. Colleagues describe him as steady in negotiation and practical in courtroom preparation.
Tilley’s membership record and mediator certification point to a practice centered on family law and dispute resolution. He has remained engaged with the State Bar’s family law community for decades, attending meetings and participating in the section’s programs. That long-term engagement reflects a career spent handling divorce, custody, and related family matters through both adversarial and mediated processes.
He currently serves Of Counsel at Neumann Law Group and practices family law and mediation in Michigan and New York.
