About John W.
John W. Molony earned his undergraduate degree in English and History from Clemson University in 2004. He stayed in the Southeast for law school and received his J.D. from Mercer University’s Walter F. George School of Law in 2007. Those formative years combined liberal arts and legal training, shaping the practical approach he brings to courtroom work.
After several years of practice, Molony founded the John W. Molony Law Office, LLC in 2016. He works as a criminal defense lawyer and is admitted to practice in South Carolina and before the United States District Court for the District of South Carolina. His office list identifies his solo firm as the vehicle for his practice since 2016. Over the years he has built a practice handling state and federal criminal matters, and his courtroom calendar reflects a mix of misdemeanor and felony dockets.
Molony has pursued training relevant to the types of cases he handles. He holds certification from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in DWI Detection and Standardized Field Sobriety Testing. He is also commissioned as a Notary Public in South Carolina. Those qualifications inform his work defending clients in impaired driving cases and related procedural challenges.
Professional affiliations play a visible role in Molony’s career. He belongs to the American Bar Association and its Criminal Justice Section, the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, and the South Carolina Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. He is a member of the National College for DUI Defense and the DUI Defense Lawyers Association. His memberships also include the Federal Bar Association and several of its local and subject-specific sections, the Federalist Society, the Charleston County Bar Association, and the South Carolina Bar’s Criminal Law Section. In 2023 he joined the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws and its Criminal Defense Section, reflecting an interest in evolving drug policy and defense strategies.
Colleagues describe Molony as methodical in his courtroom preparation and direct in client consultations. He manages a solo practice that handles pretrial work, motion practice, plea negotiations, and trial representation. He appears in state courts across South Carolina and in federal court when cases require it. He also handles administrative aspects of practice that come with a small firm, including client intake and case management.
He currently focuses his practice on criminal defense, including DWI cases and federal prosecutions.
