About John W.
John W. Menn earned his undergraduate degree from Calvin College in 2005 and went on to receive his J.D. from the University of Wisconsin Law School in 2009. The law school years anchored his interest in bankruptcy law. He returned to the Milwaukee area after graduation and built a practice rooted in Wisconsin’s bankruptcy courts.
Menn’s professional path has been largely in insolvency and bankruptcy matters. He joined Swanson Sweet LLP as a bankruptcy lawyer and became a partner there in 2023. He has also had an office at Steinhilber Swanson LLP. Over the years he has been active in bar and professional organizations that align with his practice, including membership in the American Bankruptcy Institute since 2011 and the Eastern District of Wisconsin Bar Association since 2013. He has also held another membership since 2009, reflecting an early and sustained engagement with local legal networks.
Colleagues describe Menn as steady in the courtroom and methodical at the drafting table. He works on matters that commonly arise in consumer and individual bankruptcy settings, and he has taught about those issues in an academic setting. The University of Wisconsin Law School has invited him to lecture on topics labeled “Issues Relevant to Individual Chapter 13 Cases,” a role that put him in front of law students and faculty to discuss practical and procedural concerns unique to Chapter 13 practice.
That combination of practice and teaching informs how he approaches client matters. He appears regularly in Wisconsin bankruptcy proceedings and attends practice-oriented meetings through the Eastern District Bar Association. His work involves preparing filings, negotiating plans and settlements when appropriate, and managing the procedural rhythm of bankruptcy dockets. He engages with trustees, creditors’ counsel and judges to move cases toward resolution.
Outside the courtroom, Menn has used bar association work to stay current on changes to bankruptcy rules and local procedures. He has also participated in professional discussions hosted by the American Bankruptcy Institute, where practitioners and scholars examine policy and developments in insolvency law.
Menn currently serves as a partner in the bankruptcy practice at Swanson Sweet LLP. His current practice concentrates on bankruptcy matters in Wisconsin.
