About John J Patout
John J Patout Jr. earned his law degree from South Texas College of Law in 2011. He moved quickly from law school into private practice, building experience in trial work and firm leadership over the next decade. His training in Houston set the stage for courtroom work and firm management.
After graduating, Patout began his career as an associate at Porter Hedges, LLP in 2012. He spent that year immersed in litigation matters typical of a large Texas firm. Later in 2012 he joined Patout & Shaw, PLLC as a partner. That move placed him in a smaller firm environment where he took on greater responsibility for case strategy and client communication.
In 2017 Patout transitioned to Germer PLLC as Senior Trial Counsel. The role broadened his exposure to trial preparation and high-stakes litigation. He worked on complex matters that required coordination across teams and careful courtroom presentation. Colleagues from that period noted his steady courtroom manner and attention to procedural detail.
A year later he returned to the firm that carries his name, becoming Managing Partner of Patout Shaw, PLLC in 2018. In that capacity he oversaw case intake, supervised litigation teams, and managed the administrative needs of a boutique practice. The managing partner role added practice management and business oversight to his litigation responsibilities.
Patout is admitted to practice in Texas and before the Federal Circuit. His work centers on trial litigation and related appellate matters. He handles preparation for hearings, develops case strategy, and represents clients in federal and state proceedings. His practice combines courtroom advocacy with case management tasks that keep matters moving toward resolution.
Colleagues describe Patout as methodical in evidence preparation and straightforward in client communications. He favors precise briefing and careful preparation for hearings. Outside court he has overseen firm administration and helped shape staffing and workflow at Patout Shaw, PLLC. As of 2026 he continues to serve clients through Patout Shaw, PLLC, handling litigation and appellate matters in Texas and federal courts, including the Federal Circuit.
