About John J.
John J. Bursch built a career that moves between private practice and public service. He has worked at the same major Michigan firm in two separate stretches and spent time in a statewide legal office. The arc of his work shows steady advancement and a return to private practice as a principal.
He earned a J.D. from the University of Minnesota Law School in 1997 after completing a B.A. at Western Michigan University in 1994, where he studied mathematics and music. The combination of analytical and creative subjects marks an early interest in rigorous reasoning and careful argument.
Bursch began his legal career at Warner Norcross & Judd LLP in 1997. He started as an associate and rose through the firm’s ranks. He returned to the firm as a partner in 2013, rejoining a workplace he knew well. Those years saw him working on matters handled by a mid-size firm with a statewide presence.
In 2011 he left private practice to serve in a statewide legal role at the Michigan Attorney General’s Office as Michigan Solicitor General. That post placed him in the state’s appellate apparatus, handling appeals and advising on legal positions taken by the state. After his time in that office he moved back into the private sector and later launched his own firm.
In 2016 he founded Bursch Law PLLC and serves as the firm’s owner. The move to found a small firm followed nearly two decades of combined private and public experience. His practice today centers on appellate litigation and related areas of law. He maintains an active caseload through his work at Bursch Law PLLC, where he focuses on appeals and litigation matters.
