About John George
John George Steckel built his legal foundation at the University of Colorado at Boulder, where he earned a B.A. in psychology in 1993. He then turned to law, graduating from Creighton University School of Law in 1997. Those formative years combined a study of human behavior with legal training, a mix that would shape his courtroom work.
He began his legal career immediately after law school as an assistant county lawyer in Marshall County, Iowa, serving as a prosecutor in 1997. That role put him beyond the classroom and into the courtroom. In 1999 he moved into civil litigation at VanderGinst Roche & Westensee. The civil work broadened his practice beyond criminal matters and introduced him to complex trial preparation.
By 2004 Steckel was working at Neppl Law Office, LTD. The position kept him engaged in litigation and client counseling across state lines. In 2010 he opened his own firm, Steckel Law, and has operated it since. Over time his resume reflects steady movement from government service to private practice and then to firm ownership.
Steckel is admitted to practice in both Iowa and Illinois. He has maintained active membership in several bar and trial organizations, including the Iowa State Bar Association, the Illinois State Bar Association, the American Bar Association and the Iowa Trial Lawyers Association. He has been a member of the Rock Island County Bar Association since 2001. Earlier, while at university, he helped found the Zeta Psi Fraternity chapter he belonged to from 1993 to 1997.
Colleagues describe Steckel as someone who brings courtroom experience to civil disputes. His background as a prosecutor and as a civil litigator gives him familiarity with trial procedures on both sides of the aisle. He has spent years preparing cases for trial, taking depositions, and arguing motions. That work informs how he advises clients and prepares for each hearing.
Steckel’s practice is grounded in litigation and trial work, built on the practical experience he gained in public service and private practice. He now practices at Steckel Law, handling litigation and trial matters in Iowa and Illinois.
