About John C.
John C. Barrera built his legal footing in New York before expanding his practice across state lines. He earned a B.S. from the City University of New York’s John Jay College of Criminal Justice (B.S. (1999)). He then took his legal training to Brooklyn Law School, earning a J.D. (2003). Those credentials set the stage for a career that has moved between public defense and private practice.
Early in his career Barrera worked in public defense. In 2005 he served as a lawyer with Wiebe and Fouser and the Canyon County Public Defenders Office. That period put him in courtrooms and client interview rooms. He handled day-to-day defense work and developed practical courtroom experience.
By 2007 he had launched his own practice as managing lawyer at Barrera Law Office. Two years later he joined Labrador Law Office as a lawyer, and then returned to lead his own firm again. In 2012 he became managing lawyer of Barrera Legal Group. The firm provided a base for him to take on a broader slate of matters and manage a small team.
In 2020 Barrera added an of-counsel role with Scott Legal P.C. That position expanded his professional network and exposed him to different case types and office structures. Along the way he maintained ties to New York and gained licensure that covers both New York and Idaho. He is an active member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association, which signals involvement in immigration matters alongside his other work.
Colleagues describe him as pragmatic in court and direct with clients. He has handled matters that range from public defense questions to immigration-related filings, and he has experience running a law office. His career shows frequent shifts between solo or small-firm leadership and collaborative roles in larger practices. Those moves reflect a practitioner comfortable both managing a practice and stepping into staff attorney positions.
Barrera divides his time between the Barrera Legal Group office in New York and work with outside counsel and colleagues in other jurisdictions. He continues to take cases that come through his firm and to consult on matters brought to him by other attorneys. He currently practices at Barrera Legal Group in New York, concentrating on immigration law and related issues.
