Jocelyn Cortez is an immigration attorney at GWP Immigration Law, located at 8942 Spanish Ridge Avenue, Suite 1, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Licensed to practice law in Nevada since 2006, she specializes in many immigration services. These include family immigration, green cards, citizenship, U Visa/VAWA, employment authorization, waivers, deportation defense, and various other visas. Her firm is committed to providing comprehensive legal support to individuals handling the requirements of immigration law. Born in San Salvador, El Salvador, Ms. Cortez moved to Las Vegas with her family at just five months old. This relocation was a crucial step taken to escape the civil war that plagued her homeland.
Growing up in Nevada, she developed a understanding of the challenges faced by immigrant families. In 2003, she earned her Bachelor of Arts in English Literature, graduating magna cum laude from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. This academic foundation set the stage for her legal career, which began shortly after she obtained her Juris Doctor from the University of Arizona James E. Rogers College of Law in 2006. Following law school, Ms. Cortez worked by clerking for the Honorable Judge Valorie J — Vega in the Eighth Judicial District Court of Nevada. This position provided her with insights into the judicial process and developed her legal skills.
After her clerkship, she joined England Law Office, where she represented employees in various labor law matters. Her work included handling Title VII claims, the Americans with Disabilities Act, Age Discrimination in Employment, and hotel discrimination laws. This experience in labor law laid a strong foundation for her later transition to immigration law. In 2011, Ms. Cortez shifted her focus to immigration law, driven by a focus on helping immigrant families achieve their American dream. Her dedication to this cause has only deepened over the years. In January 2022, she was appointed by Governor Steve Sisolak to serve on the Nevada Equal Rights Commission, where she continues to advocate for equal rights and representation.
Additionally, she has held the position of president of the Nevada Latino Bar Association and serves as an abogada consultora for the Consulate of Mexico, further demonstrating her commitment to the community. Fluent in both English and Spanish, Ms. Cortez is dedicated to serving the immigrant community in Nevada. Her efforts have not gone unnoticed; she was recognized as a "Top Immigration Lawyer" in 2021 and honored as a "Women to Watch" in 2022. Clients consistently commend her for her attentiveness and patience, noting that she simplifies complex cases, making them easier to handle and understand. Through her work, Ms. Cortez continues to make a significant impact on the lives of those she serves, embodying the spirit of advocacy and support for immigrant rights.
