About Joanna
Joanna Suyes began her academic journey at the College of William and Mary, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts. She went on to receive her J.D. from the University of Richmond School of Law in 2007. Those years shaped the legal grounding she would rely on throughout her career.
After law school, Suyes entered private practice and moved quickly into matters involving disability and claimant representation. Over time she built a practice centered on administrative hearings and appeals. She represents individuals before administrative law judges and in appeals where necessary.
Her involvement in professional organizations has been a constant thread. She has served as president of the Metro Richmond Women’s Bar Association and now remains active in that group. She is president-elect of the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association. She also served as chair of the American Association for Justice Social Security Section. She holds sustaining membership in the National Organization of Social Security Claimants’ Representatives.
Those leadership roles have put her in the midst of continuing legal education and bar governance. She has led panels and worked on programs intended to help newer attorneys handle Social Security matters and courtroom practice. Colleagues describe her as someone who takes a hands-on approach to association work, balancing administrative duties with program development.
Suyes runs Suyes Law, PLLC. The firm handles a range of Social Security disability matters. It manages initial claims, hearings, and appellate work. Her practice often involves preparing medical records, representing clients at hearings, and pursuing appeals when necessary.
Outside of case work, she spends time mentoring younger lawyers through bar association initiatives. She also participates in continuing education offerings for attorneys who handle disability claims. Her practice remains concentrated on Social Security disability representation and related appeals.
