Jill A. Michaux is a seasoned bankruptcy attorney based in Topeka, Kansas, with over four decades of experience in the legal field. Her primary focus is on consumer bankruptcy cases, where she represents individuals and small business proprietors navigating Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 bankruptcy proceedings. As the managing partner of Neis & Michaux, P.A., Jill is known for her expertise and dedication to her clients. A native of Topeka, Jill earned her Bachelor of Science in Journalism from the University of Kansas in 1977. This foundation in communication has undoubtedly aided her legal practice.
In 1982, she graduated with Dean’s Honors from Washburn University School of Law, a significant achievement that marked the beginning of her legal career. After passing the Kansas Bar Exam that same year, she began practicing law, quickly establishing herself in the field of bankruptcy law. In 1992, Jill made history by becoming the first Kansas attorney to be board certified in consumer bankruptcy law by the American Board of Certification. This certification shows her commitment to maintaining high standards in her practice. Her involvement in the legal community extends beyond her practice; she served as a director of the National Consumer Bankruptcy Rights Center and was a member of the Advisory Committee on Bankruptcy Rules to the U.S. Supreme Court from 2012 to 2018.
These roles reflect her influence on bankruptcy law at both the state and national levels. Jill's professional affiliations are extensive. She was a founding member and director of the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys, serving from 1993 to 2000. Additionally, she played a pivotal role as a founding member and past president of the Topeka Area Bankruptcy Council. Her contributions to the legal community also include her tenure as a Municipal Court Judge for the City of Rossville, Kansas, from 1993 through 2009. During this time, she also served as past president of the Kansas Municipal Judges Association, further demonstrating her leadership within the judiciary.
On a personal note, Jill is married to Mark W — Neis, who is also her law partner at Neis & Michaux, P.A. Together, they have one daughter, Michelle Neis. Michelle graduated from Chicago-Kent College of Law in 2013 and is admitted to practice law in both Illinois and Kansas. This family connection to the legal profession continues the legacy of commitment to law and service that Jill has exemplified throughout her career.
