About Jessica

Jessica Birken built a foundation in both law and nonprofit management at Hamline University. She earned her J.D. from Hamline University School of Law in 2007 and completed an M.A. in Nonprofit Management at Hamline University in 2010. The combination of legal training and nonprofit study informs how she approaches problems today.

Her background crosses two fields that often meet in practice: legal counsel and organizational governance. Birken’s legal education gave her the tools of analysis and advocacy. Her graduate work explored the structures and challenges of nonprofit organizations. Together those experiences shape how she evaluates client needs and the practical options available to them.

Birken is licensed to practice in Minnesota. She also holds a mediation certification from Simon Mediation. That credential reflects an interest in resolving conflict through negotiated agreement rather than litigation. In mediation she draws on legal knowledge and an understanding of organizational dynamics to help parties identify workable solutions.

Her work spans areas where nonprofit concerns and dispute resolution intersect. She advises on governance questions, compliance matters, and the processes that help boards and leaders move forward after internal disputes. She also handles civil matters that require careful negotiation or alternative dispute resolution. Colleagues describe her approach as methodical and attentive to the facts. Clients often value straight answers and practical next steps.

Birken’s file work and client meetings reveal a lawyer who pays attention to detail. She prepares thoroughly for mediations and meetings. Documents are organized. Timelines are mapped. That preparation aims to keep options clear and to make the decision points easier for clients.

Outside of casework, her training in nonprofit management keeps her connected to community and organizational issues. That perspective matters when legal problems touch governance, funding, or volunteer operations. It also helps when she serves as a neutral at the table and needs to balance legal concerns with organizational realities.

She maintains an active practice in Minnesota where she combines mediation services and legal counsel for nonprofit and civil matters. Her current practice focuses on mediation and legal issues affecting nonprofit organizations and related civil disputes.
