About Jeffrey R

Jeffrey R Russell took a traditional route into law. He earned a Bachelor of Science in political science from Furman University in 1999 and later completed his J.D. at the Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law at Campbell University. Those years set the foundation for a career centered on state appellate work and family law practice.

Early in his professional life he served at the North Carolina Court of Appeals. In 2012 he clerked for the Honorable John C. Martin, who was then Chief Judge. The position placed him inside the appellate process and exposed him to a broad range of legal issues handled by the court.

The following year he moved from the courthouse to private practice. In 2013 he joined Tharrington Smith as a lawyer and established his practice there. His work at the firm has been rooted in matters that arise regularly in state courts and family court settings.

In 2018 he received board certification as a specialist in family law from the North Carolina State Bar Board of Legal Specialization. That credential signals formal recognition of his work in family law by the state bar’s specialist program. It joins his courtroom experience and appellate background as part of his professional profile.

Membership in professional organizations has been a steady part of his career. He is a member of the North Carolina Bar Association’s Family Law Section and has been listed with that section since 2012. He also holds membership in the Wake County Bar Association and is a member of the Order of the Barristers. Those affiliations reflect ongoing engagement with peers who practice in similar areas of law.

Colleagues describe him as methodical in preparation and deliberate in court. He has combined appellate exposure from his clerkship with trial and negotiation work at the firm. That mix of experiences informs how he approaches cases and advises clients.

He maintains an active practice at Tharrington Smith, LLP. He handles family law matters and related proceedings in North Carolina courts. He currently practices family law at Tharrington Smith, LLP.
