About Jeff Kurt
Jeff Kurt Petersen is a dedicated family law attorney based in Longview, Washington. With over 18 years of legal experience, he specializes in family law, estate planning, probate, and both arbitration and mediation. Licensed to practice in Washington and Oregon, he currently focuses his legal services exclusively in Washington. His Washington State Bar Association number is 46300, while his Oregon State Bar number is 071614. Jeff earned his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of California, Santa Barbara, in 1987. He later pursued his Juris Doctor at Chapman University School of Law, graduating in 2006.
During his time in law school, he became certified to mediate disputes in 2005. This certification laid the groundwork for his future work as a certified mediator, and he is an active member of the Washington Mediation Association. Before establishing his practice in Washington, Jeff began his legal career in Oregon. He served as an attorney fellow at Lewis & Clark Law School, where he worked in civil litigation, contracts, mediation, and administrative law. His commitment to social justice is evident in his volunteer work in Columbia County, Oregon, where he counseled and represented victims of domestic violence. He also assisted with family law matters, including divorce and guardianship cases, and represented elderly victims of consumer fraud.
Additionally, Jeff provided parenting plan mediation services through the Oregon Department of Justice. In 2014, Jeff's pro bono advocacy for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking was recognized by the Oregon Law Center. He received a Certificate of Merit & Gratitude for his two years of dedicated service, underscoring his commitment to helping those in need. Since relocating to Washington, he has continued to focus on family law, estate planning, and mediation. His approach emphasizes peaceful dispute resolution, helping clients navigate complex legal issues with compassion and understanding. Jeff is an active member of the Washington State Bar Association and the Washington Mediation Association.
He also belongs to Wealth Counsel, a national organization of estate planning attorneys. Outside of his legal practice, Jeff values spending time with his family and enjoys various outdoor activities, including surfing, mountain biking, hiking, photography, and travel.
