About Jeff

Jeff Kaban studied history at Washington University in St. Louis, earning his B.A. in 1996. He returned to California for law school and received his J.D. from the University of California College of the Law, San Francisco in 2004. Those academic years shaped his interest in litigation and courtroom work, and they remain the foundation of a steady legal career.

Early in his professional life Kaban built credentials that allowed him to appear in both state and federal courts. He is admitted to practice in California and before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, and he holds courtroom admissions to the U.S. District Courts for the Central and Northern Districts of California. Those admissions underline a practice that spans local trial work and federal appellate matters.

Kaban serves as a partner at Cooley Godward Kronish LLP. In that role he has worked on matters that require coordination across teams and careful handling of procedural and substantive issues. He has experience moving cases through pretrial stages, handling discovery disputes, and presenting arguments in court filings and oral advocacy. Colleagues describe him as methodical in preparing cases and direct in his courtroom presentations.

Clients and fellow lawyers encounter Kaban in litigation settings that demand attention to detail and familiarity with both state and federal rules. He has guided cases from initial pleadings through motion practice and, where appropriate, into appeals before the Ninth Circuit. His docket work has involved a range of civil disputes, and he is comfortable managing complex schedules and coordinating with co-counsel and experts.

Outside the courtroom Kaban keeps current on developments in federal procedure and case law that affect district court practice. He draws on his academic background in history when assembling narratives and evidence for trial. That background also informs his approach to legal research and argument structure.

Kaban’s path combines steady courtroom practice, appellate experience, and the institutional setting of a national firm. He lives and works in California and maintains active admissions in the identified federal jurisdictions. He currently practices as a partner at Cooley Godward Kronish LLP and handles litigation matters in state and federal courts.
