About Jeff
Jeff Alter earned his J.D. from California Western School of Law, where he studied litigation and mediation. His legal training combined courtroom technique with alternative dispute resolution. That combination surfaced early in his career and has shaped his approach since.
Alter began his professional life in legal publishing. In 1993 he worked as an author and editor for multiple legal publishers. Those years sharpened his research and writing skills and gave him a familiarity with precedent and procedural detail that later informed his work on the bench and at the clerk’s office.
In 1999 he served as a judicial officer in Connecticut courts. That role exposed him to a range of contested matters and the day-to-day realities of judicial decision-making. He moved to Colorado and, in 2003, took a position as a law clerk for Colorado courts. The clerkship provided another vantage point on how judges evaluate evidence and craft opinions.
In 2006 he opened Alter Legal Family Law. He is listed as owner and member of the firm. Since then he has built a practice centered on family law matters. He joined the Colorado Family Law Court Program as a participating lawyer in 2006 and has remained active in that program. In 2008 he began serving as a mentor in the Colorado Bar Association Family Law Section Mentoring Program, a role he continues to hold.
Alter holds memberships in several professional groups. He belongs to the Colorado Bar Association, the Arapahoe County Bar Association and the Denver Bar Association. Those memberships reflect a practice rooted in Colorado’s legal community and an interest in staying current on developments that affect family law and court procedures.
Colleagues describe him as someone who combines courtroom experience with an ability to explain legal issues plainly. His background as a judicial officer and clerk gives him a practical sense of how cases move through the system. His early work in legal publishing contributes to a methodical approach to research and drafting.
He maintains an active client practice through Alter Legal Family Law and continues to participate in court programs and mentoring projects aimed at improving family law practice in Colorado. His current practice focuses on family law matters in Colorado.
