About Jay
Jay Leiderman trained in two American university systems before starting his law practice. He studied history and film at the University of Michigan, earning a B.A. in 1993 after beginning there in 1989. He went on to law school at the University of San Francisco, completing his J.D. in 1999.
He began practicing law the same year he finished law school. In 1999 he established the Law Offices Of Jay Leiderman, PC. From that base he has handled a range of criminal matters in California courts and in the Ninth Circuit. His work has involved trial representation as well as appeals and federal filings when cases reached the circuit level.
Leiderman holds a specialist credential in criminal law from the California State Bar Board of Legal Specialization. That designation marks a particular concentration in criminal defense rather than general practice. He is admitted to practice in state courts in California and before the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.
Professional associations have been part of his career for many years. He has been a member of the Ventura County Criminal Defense Bar Association board since 2002. Nationally, his memberships include the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and the National Lawyers Guild. He joined the California Public Defenders Association in 2000 and the California Defense Lawyers Association in 2010. He also participates in the Legal Committee for the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, reflecting repeated involvement in matters related to marijuana policy and criminal charges.
Leiderman’s practice combines courtroom work and written advocacy. He has represented clients at arraignments, pretrial hearings, trials and on appeal. He has handled both misdemeanor and felony cases, and he regularly files briefs in federal appeals when cases go to the Ninth Circuit.
