About Jason

Jason Bartell built a foundation in business before turning to law. He earned a B.S. in Agricultural Economics and Accounting from the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign (1995). He followed that with a J.D. from Southern Illinois University Carbondale (1998) and completed an MBA at the same institution (1998). The combination of accounting, business and law informs much of his professional work.

Early in his career Bartell combined legal training and financial credentialing. He is a Certified Public Accountant licensed by the Illinois Department of Professional and Financial Regulation. He also maintains bar admissions and court admissions that extend beyond state lines: he is admitted in Illinois and Indiana and before the Seventh Circuit and the United States Supreme Court. He has maintained membership in the Illinois Bar Association since 1998.

Bartell joined Bartell Powell LLP and became a partner there in 2005. His role at the firm grew out of that dual background in law and accounting. Colleagues describe him as someone who brings both statutory and numerical analysis to file preparation and client counseling. He has handled matters that require review of financial records, tax considerations and the interplay of corporate obligations.

His practice has covered transactional work and litigation. On the transactional side he has worked on corporate governance issues, contract drafting and tax-related planning. In contested matters he has prepared pleadings and worked through discovery that turns on financial detail. The CPA credential allows him to read complex financial statements and speak the technical language that many cases demand.

Outside of firm responsibilities, Bartell has remained connected to professional circles in Illinois. He keeps current with continuing education that bridges accounting rules and legal ethics. That combination is useful when cases hinge on audits, tax positions or valuations. He uses pragmatic analysis rather than broad theory when advising clients.

He operates from the firm’s Bloomington and Champaign offices and continues to serve both individual and business clients. He currently practices at Bartell Powell LLP, handling corporate, tax and civil litigation matters.
