About Jamie Mauhay
Jamie Mauhay Powers is an attorney licensed in California who built a career that crosses government, nonprofit work and legal education. Powers began law studies at Lincoln Law School of Sacramento in 2015 and earned a J.D. in 2019. The legal training came after years working inside state government, and it shaped an approach to law grounded in policy and practical problem-solving.
Powers’s public-sector career started in the legislative branch. In 2008 Powers worked as a legislative aide in the California State Senate. That role was followed by a position as legislative director in the California State Assembly in 2012. Those years in legislative offices exposed Powers to the mechanics of drafting policy, advising elected officials and coordinating among agency staff. The experience also provided an inside view of how laws move from concept to statute.
In the nonprofit sector, Powers served as a program manager at the Child Abuse Prevention Center beginning in 2015. That role involved program oversight and coordination around services for vulnerable children. In 2019 Powers took a post as director of external and governmental affairs at Head Start California, a position that linked community programming with state-level advocacy and stakeholder engagement.
After completing the J.D., Powers joined Kershaw, Cook & Talley as a lawyer in 2021. The same year Powers returned to Lincoln Law School of Sacramento as an adjunct professor. The parallel paths of teaching and practicing law reflect an interest in both the theoretical underpinnings of legal doctrine and the daily work of representation. Powers holds active membership in the California State Bar beginning in 2019 and participates in professional groups, including the American Association for Justice Minority Caucus and the Sacramento Filipino American Lawyers Associations Social Committee.
Colleagues and students describe Powers as someone who moves easily between settings: courtrooms and classrooms, agency meetings and community events. The resume shows steady involvement in government relations, program management and legal education. That mixture informs how Powers handles legal matters — attentive to statutory detail and mindful of public policy implications.
Powers practices law in California and maintains roles in both private practice and legal education. Their current practice centers on legal matters arising under California law.
