About James T.
James T. Lang has spent decades moving between engineering and law. He began his academic path at the University of Southern California, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Industrial and Systems Engineering in 1982. He then turned to law, taking his Juris Doctor at Case Western Reserve University School of Law and completing that degree in 1989. He later returned to study environmental law and received an LL.M. from The George Washington University Law School in 1995.
Early in his career Lang combined technical training and legal study. That background informed his approach to complex regulatory and compliance matters. He is licensed to practice in Ohio and Virginia, and he has served in roles that intersect law, community oversight and professional ethics. In 2004 he sat on the Second District Disciplinary Committee of the Virginia State Bar, a position that required careful consideration of professional responsibility and disciplinary standards.
Lang has been active in civic organizations in the Tidewater area. He chaired the Bayside District for the Tidewater Council of the Boy Scouts of America in 2012. That same period saw him take on board responsibilities at the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities, beginning in 2012. He has also worked as a mentor at The UpCenter in Norfolk in 2013, helping to guide programs aimed at youth development and workforce readiness.
His professional associations include memberships in the Norfolk Portsmouth Bar Association, where he has been active since 2004, and the Virginia Beach Bar Association since 2011. Those local bar memberships have kept him engaged with peers on issues affecting courts, practice standards and continuing legal education. Over the years he has balanced volunteer commitments and bar activities alongside client work.
Lang practices from Pender & Coward, PC, where he draws on an analytical background in engineering and formal training in environmental law. He handles matters that require attention to regulatory detail and procedural rigor. He maintains a practice across Virginia and Ohio and continues to participate in community and bar activities relevant to the profession. His current practice focuses on legal matters that involve regulatory compliance, professional responsibility and community-oriented legal work.
