About James

James Slater practices law across four jurisdictions: Colorado, the District of Columbia, Washington and Florida. He appears for clients in both state and federal matters and maintains an active multi-jurisdictional practice through his own firm.

Over the course of his career he has handled a mix of matters that touch litigation, transactional work and regulatory concerns. His experience spans courtroom appearances, written advocacy and negotiated resolutions. Colleagues describe him as methodical; he approaches each matter by building from the facts and the governing law.

Clients have turned to him for representation that requires coordination across state lines and different court systems. That work often involves managing filings in multiple jurisdictions, aligning procedural deadlines and translating regionally specific rules into a coherent strategy. He has worked on cases that required careful pretrial preparation and on transactional projects where documentation and timing mattered.

In disputes he has taken part in contested hearings and settlement discussions. He prepares pleadings, motions and briefs, and he participates in discovery and evidentiary proceedings when needed. He also spends time negotiating agreements and resolving matters outside of court when that serves a client’s interests.

On the transactional and regulatory side he advises on compliance matters and contract terms. That work involves drafting and reviewing agreements, counseling on regulatory obligations, and helping clients anticipate downstream consequences of their choices. He often collaborates with in-house counsel and outside specialists to align legal work with business realities.

He now leads Slater Legal PLLC. From that base he manages client matters across the four jurisdictions where he is admitted. The firm handles both contentious and non-contentious matters, and he allocates time between court work, negotiation and client counseling. He continues to practice actively in Colorado, the District of Columbia, Washington and Florida and focuses his current work on cross-jurisdictional representation and legal problems that require coordinated, multi-state handling.
