About James S.

James S. Sweeney built his path to law on an early interest in history and public service. He earned a J.D. from Capital University Law School in 2007 after completing undergraduate and graduate work in history. His academic background includes graduate study in history at George Mason University and a bachelor’s degree in history from Ohio University.

While still early in his career, Sweeney spent time in public-sector internships. In 2009 he worked with the Franklin County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office and undertook an internship with the City of Reynoldsburg. Those summer positions exposed him to courtroom procedure, local government operations and the practical demands of public legal work.

He entered private practice in 2011 when he founded James Sweeney Law, LLC. A year later he took on the role of village solicitor for Alexandria, Ohio. That municipal role required advising local officials, drafting ordinances and representing the village on legal matters. It reinforced his experience on the intersection of law and local government.

Sweeney’s bar memberships include participation in the Columbus Bar Association from 2011 through 2014. He is admitted to practice in Ohio and before the United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio. Those credentials have permitted him to appear in state and federal matters arising in the region.

Colleagues describe Sweeney as straightforward in court and practical at the negotiating table. He has combined courtroom exposure from his early prosecutorial internship with municipal work and private-practice responsibilities. The mix has left him comfortable handling procedural challenges, advising public clients and representing private clients on matters that touch local government and state law.

Over the years his practice has remained anchored in Ohio. He has maintained an office under the James Sweeney Law, LLC name and continued to take on matters that require an understanding of both courtroom procedure and municipal regulatory frameworks. His work often involves drafting and interpreting local ordinances, advising municipal boards and representing clients in state and federal venues.

Sweeney’s career reflects steady involvement in both public and private practice in Ohio. He currently practices at James Sweeney Law, LLC, handling matters in Ohio and before the United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio.
